In college, I started out as a chemistry and biology major. I took my first business classes and never looked back. Having graduated with a B.S. in finance and economics, I went to work for a hedge fund software company here in Reno. While there, I met my current business partner, Chris Strauss. He and I have been slowly building up our current venture, RenoTechs.com, since 2011, and now it is our full-time gig.
WHY DO I DO WHAT I DO
I absolutely love helping people, which is why for the longest time I wanted to be a physician. Fast-forward to today, I get to help local business owners grow their businesses through our efforts. There is nothing more rewarding than seeing our clients do well, and it is for this reason we put our heart and soul into everything we do.
WHAT BROUGHT ME TO RENO OR WHY I STAY IN RENO
I transferred to UNR from Grand Canyon University in 2003 to finish up my studies and to get in-state tuition. My plan was to graduate from Nevada and move back to Phoenix to find a job. Working for the software company for five years allowed me to travel all over the country. Every time I was away, I came to appreciate how great it is to call Reno home.
WHAT I DO TO LEAVE WORK AT THE OFFICE
Managing the online marketing for multiple companies is not something that fits nicely into the “9-5 mold.” I’d have to say the best way to “get away” every day is to go to the gym and forget about everything for an hour.
HOW I GIVE BACK TO MY COMMUNITY
Currently, I am actively involved with Think Kindness, which I cofounded, and I have also been a mentor to my brother Billy from Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northern Nevada for over 3 years now. Other nonprofit organizations that I support on a regular basis include Step 1 Inc. and Care Chest of Sierra Nevada.
BEST BUSINESS BOOK I’VE READ LATELY
The most recent books I have read that have impacted my business are “The Lean Startup” by Eric Ries and “Givers Gain” by Ivan R. Misner. “The Lean Startup” has really helped Chris and I prioritize the various aspects of our business that have made the biggest impact on our bottom line. Having a solid understanding of what is necessary and what is fluff has honestly been what has kept us in growth mode and continues to allow us to expand at a healthy pace. “Givers Gain” has helped solidify the notion that when businesspeople make it a point to help others and honestly work to make this happen, they usually gain the most out of the experience through a reciprocal benefit.
BEST PLACE IN RENO TO MEET WITH CLIENTS OR COLLEAGUES
Some of my go-to places include Campo, Walden’s Coffeehouse, Midtown Eats and the Brewer’s Cabinet.
MY LEADERSHIP PHILOSOPHY
Inspire and motivate others by leading by example with enthusiasm, altruism and hard work.
My biggest professional accomplishment to date is winning the RGJ’s Reno-Tahoe “Twenty Under 40” award in 2011. My biggest personal achievement will happen this October when I marry my best friend, Jade.
If I could do something else, I would…
Be an emergency room physician or winemaker.
